Draw and Describe Partner Game

Back-to-back partners describe a picture in words while the other draws it, building listening, vocabulary and precise language.

Learning outcomes

  • Give clear, ordered spoken directions
  • Use position and shape vocabulary (above, left, circle, triangle)
  • Compare a drawing with the original and explain differences

What you need

  • A finished How to Draw picture printed for each Describer
  • Paper and pencils, or the Drawing Pad on a device
  • A timer

Puzzle tools used

All tools are free, with no sign-up, and every sheet can be printed with an answer key.

Step by step

  1. Pair students and sit them back to back. One is the Describer and holds a finished How to Draw picture (house, rocket, cat or others). The other is the Drawer.
  2. The Describer explains the picture using shapes and positions only. They may not name the object.
  3. The Drawer draws exactly what they hear and may ask yes-or-no questions.
  4. After 6 minutes, reveal the picture and compare. Circle the parts that matched.
  5. Swap roles with a different subject. Finish by listing the words that helped most.

Differentiation

Support

Let the Describer name the object and use the four step captions as a script.

Extend

Choose a picture with five or more shapes (sailboat) and remove the questions rule.

Discussion questions

  • Which word made your partner draw the right thing?
  • What instruction was unclear?
  • How did you check your partner understood?

What to look for

Students use precise position and shape words and revise their directions when the drawing differs.
