What you need
- A tablet or laptop per team
- A photo of a class event (with permission), or a built-in picture
Puzzle tools used
All tools are free, with no sign-up, and every sheet can be printed with an answer key.
Step by step
- Open the Jigsaw tool. For a class photo, use the Your photo button; the image is processed in the browser and is not uploaded.
- Choose the number of pieces: 3 x 3 for a warm-up, 4 x 4 for the main round.
- Assign team roles: Navigator (describes where pieces go), Mover (swaps the pieces) and Checker (spots errors).
- Teams solve, then rotate roles and solve the same picture again with a new shuffle.
- Debrief: which role was hardest, and what did the team say that helped?
Differentiation
Support
Use 3 x 3 and a built-in picture such as Meadow.
Extend
Use 5 x 5 and a 5-minute limit, then ask teams to write down their strategy.
Discussion questions
- How did you decide where to start?
- What did each role contribute?
- How did your team handle disagreements?
What to look for
Students use clear language, listen to the navigator, and rotate roles without prompting.
