Differentiation
Support
Use only two colours and let children say the pattern aloud.
Extend
Try ABC and ABCD patterns and ask children to find the repeating part.
Discussion questions
- What is the repeating part?
- What will come after this?
- Can you make a pattern that uses three colours?
What to look for
Children identify the repeating unit and extend patterns correctly.
Frequently asked questions
How many pictures should I show?
At least two full repeats, so the pattern is clear.
Can I use classroom objects?
Yes. Real objects help before moving to pictures.
