Make balanced, fresh groups quickly so students work with different classmates, without any arguments.

Learning outcomes

  • Work with a range of classmates
  • Accept group choices fairly
  • Take on a role within a team

What you need

  • Your class list
  • A projector, or a printed copy of the teams

Puzzle tools used

All tools are free, with no sign-up, and every sheet can be printed with an answer key.

Step by step

  1. Paste your class list into the Name Picker. Choose Make teams and the number of teams or team size.
  2. Display the teams on the board and ask each group to move together.
  3. Within each group, students choose roles (reader, recorder, timekeeper, speaker).
  4. Use Random order to decide which team presents first.
  5. Make new teams for the next activity so students meet different partners.

Differentiation

Support

Use pairs and assign roles for them.

Extend

Ask groups to set a goal and a working rule before they start.

Discussion questions

  • What did your group do well?
  • How did you share the work?
  • What would you change next time?

What to look for

Groups form quickly, roles are shared and students are positive about their partners.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep certain students apart or together?

The tool deals names at random. If you need constraints, move one or two students manually after the teams appear.

Are names stored?
