Mystery Word Scramble Warm-Up

A quick starter where students unscramble theme words and use them to guess the lesson topic.

Learning outcomes

  • Use letter patterns and common endings to decode words
  • Connect vocabulary to a new topic
  • Predict a lesson topic from clues

What you need

  • Printed Word Scramble sheets (5 words), or the sheet on screen
  • Mini whiteboards

Puzzle tools used

All tools are free, with no sign-up, and every sheet can be printed with an answer key.

Step by step

  1. Before class, generate a Word Scramble in a theme that matches today's lesson (Space for a planets unit, for example). Print or display it.
  2. Students unscramble the words on mini whiteboards, working alone for two minutes.
  3. Compare answers in pairs and agree the spelling of each word.
  4. Ask which topic the words belong to and why. Let students predict what today's lesson is about.
  5. Finish by opening Word of the Day and adding the new word to the class word wall.

Differentiation

Support

Offer the first letter of each word and use only 5 words.

Extend

Ask students to write a single sentence that uses three of the unscrambled words together.

Discussion questions

  • Which letters helped you most, vowels or endings?
  • What do these words have in common?
  • Which word was new to you?

What to look for

Students use patterns (th, ing, tion), not guesswork, and link the vocabulary to the topic.

Frequently asked questions

Will the scramble ever leave a word unchanged?

No. The tool makes sure the letters are shuffled so the original word never appears unchanged.

Which themes are available?

Animals, Nature, Space, Food and School.
