Times Table Stations

Rotate through four short times-table stations that mix online play, printed practice and partner quizzing.

Learning outcomes

  • Recall multiplication facts fluently
  • Check answers independently using an answer key
  • Explain a strategy for a hard fact

What you need

  • One tablet or computer for the online station
  • Printed Shuffled Practice sheets for one table
  • Printed Math Worksheets (multiplication only)
  • A timer and a rotation chart

Puzzle tools used

All tools are free, with no sign-up, and every sheet can be printed with an answer key.

Step by step

  1. Choose the table your class is working on. In the Times Tables tool set Shuffled Practice and print enough sheets for the class, with an answer key kept aside.
  2. Set up four stations: Play Online (Times Tables), Printed Practice, Partner Quiz (one student reads facts from the key, the other answers) and Math Worksheet (multiplication only).
  3. Split students into four groups and set the timer for 6 minutes per station.
  4. Rotate on the timer. Students mark their own printed work with the key and put a star by every fact they missed.
  5. In the final five minutes, ask the class to share the starred facts and one trick that helped, such as doubling or skip-counting.

Differentiation

Support

Limit the table to 2, 5 and 10 first and keep the range to Multiply up to 10.

Extend

Set Multiply up to 12 or 15 and ask students to find a pattern in the answers, such as the digits of the nines table.

Discussion questions

  • Which fact do you always forget, and what could help?
  • Is 7 x 8 the same as 8 x 7? How do you know?
  • Which station helped you most today?

What to look for

Speed and accuracy improve across the rotation, students self-correct with the key, and they can name a strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Which tables should I start with?

Start with 2, 5 and 10, then 3 and 4, and leave 6, 7, 8 and 9 for last. The tool supports tables from 1 to 30.
